After 16 years of persistent efforts, Indian authorities have successfully extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistani-born Canadian businessman, arrived in New Delhi on April 10, 2025, following his extradition from the

 United States. ​

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) formally arrested Rana upon his arrival. This marks a significant milestone in India's pursuit of justice for the 26/11 attacks, which claimed 166 lives and left over 300 injured.

Rana's extradition follows the rejection of his appeals by the U.S. Supreme Court, culminating in a decision announced by President Donald Trump in February 2025. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah hailed the development as a major diplomatic achievement, emphasizing the government's commitment to bringing perpetrators of terrorism to justice

In 2013, Rana was sentenced to 14 years in U.S. federal prison for providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the terrorist organization responsible for the Mumbai attacks. His conviction was partly based on evidence that he used his immigration consultancy as a cover to facilitate reconnaissance missions for the attacks.​

The extradition underscores the collaborative efforts between India and the United States in combating global terrorism. As the NIA prepares to interrogate Rana, this development brings renewed hope for the victims' families and reaffirms India's dedication to holding all individuals involved in the 26/11 attacks accountable.
